Tipping is a common and traditional practice in Turkey; it is given for everything from table service in restaurants to massages in Turkish hammams. It is generally a reward for good service and, for most locals, an important way to supplement their incomes, which are considered low by Western standards. Tourists arriving in the country often do not know how much to tip or who to tip. The amounts below are intended as a guide and are based on local conditions and feedback we have received from previous travelers:
Restaurants and taxis: Leave your change at local markets and simple restaurants. In more luxurious restaurants, we recommend leaving 5% to 10% of your bill.
Local guides: Throughout your tour, you may occasionally have a local guide in addition to your tour leader. For local guides, we recommend $10 USD per person per day.
Drivers: You may have various private drivers during your trip. Some may accompany you for short journeys, while others may travel with you for several days. We recommend a higher tip for drivers who are more involved with the group, but $5 USD per person per day is generally appropriate.
Gulet Boat Tours: If you are taking a gulet boat tour in southern Turkey, we recommend paying $10 USD per person per day for the boat crew.
Tour leader: As a general recommendation, we suggest approximately $100–120 USD per person for the entire tour, but this is entirely up to you.

It is advisable to always keep a small amount of emergency cash or traveler's checks in a separate location from your main funds and cards you use. This way, if you lose your wallet or bag, you will have a safety net to make a few phone calls and cover your basic needs for several days.
Using both cash and credit cards together is one of the most practical payment solutions while traveling. A significant portion of restaurants, bars, and pubs accept credit cards.
MasterCard and Visa are the most widely accepted cards throughout Turkey. American Express cards can be used at specific ATMs and Amex offices. Credit cards are also functional for cash advances and allow you to withdraw Turkish Lira from ATMs nationwide through partner banks. Bank cards and ATMs are available in many regions of Turkey; access is easier especially in major centers such as Istanbul, Çanakkale, Selçuk, Pamukkale, Fethiye, Kaş, Cappadocia, and Ankara. Plan your budget carefully before your trip and withdraw the necessary amount of cash before venturing far from large cities.
Whenever possible, prefer ATMs located directly at bank branches and consider the banks' operating hours. If the machine retains your card, this gives you the chance to contact the bank and retrieve it.
Exchanging money into Turkish Lira in Turkey is often more cost-effective than exchanging currency in your home country. Withdrawing cash from ATMs or using credit cards generally provides more favorable exchange rates. PTT branches and banks also mostly offer reasonable rates. In the past, due to high inflation in Turkey, it was considered more prudent to exchange only the amount needed for daily expenses. However, in recent years, the currency has shown a more stable appearance against major foreign currencies.
It is not possible to definitively determine the daily spending amount for everyone. However, as a general estimate, between 20 and 40 Euros per day may be sufficient for basic meals, additional food, and optional entrance fees. If you plan to purchase numerous souvenirs or keepsakes, you should create a separate budget for these expenses.

Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is mandatory for all our tours. Your policy must cover personal accident and liability, medical treatment costs, medical repatriation, travel delay, and trip interruption. Additionally, we strongly recommend that you obtain coverage for cancellation, baggage loss, and baggage theft. Personal health insurance often does not provide sufficient coverage and cannot replace suitable travel protection for our tours. If you do not provide us with your insurance details or arrive without insurance, you will not be allowed to join the tour; in such cases, no refund will be issued.

Turkey offers rich experiences to travelers thanks to its breathtaking natural landscapes, world-renowned historical sites, and warm Turkish hospitality. You can explore lands bearing traces of civilizations stretching from the Hittites to the Ottomans and discover a geography with more classical Hellenistic settlements than Greece. Almost all great empires have passed through these lands, conquered them, and left lasting marks.
Turkey is a country that maintains a unique balance between East and West, carrying two distinct identities simultaneously. As the only NATO member in the Middle East region, the country has previously been a candidate for European Union membership. While possessing many characteristics of the Western world, it also preserves its own distinct differences and striking contrasts. Mosques rise near churches; remnants from the Greco-Roman period, ancient Hittite structures, and Neolithic settlements can be seen right next to modern life.
The modern Republic of Turkey was built upon the Ottoman legacy remaining in Anatolia and took shape as a result of a comprehensive transformation led largely by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Although officially a secular republic, the vast majority of the population considers themselves Muslim, at least culturally or nominally. Due to its large surface area, there are significant differences in development and living conditions between regions. Nevertheless, the country remains an extremely enjoyable travel destination, especially thanks to its helpful, warm, and hospitable people.

Time Zone: Turkey is 2 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time. During the period when daylight saving time is in effect, from the last Sunday in March to the last Saturday in October, Turkey is 3 hours ahead of GMT.
Electricity: For electrical appliances, a plug compatible with 220 volts AC and 50 hertz with two round pins is required.
Religion and Local Law: Approximately 90% of the Turkish population is Muslim; however, for many people, this is more of a cultural identity than strict religious rules. Especially in western Turkey, including Istanbul which stands out for its modern and cosmopolitan structure, it is difficult to gauge this ratio in daily life. Turkish law is secular and grants freedom of worship to individuals of different beliefs. It is recommended that you carry at least one set of modest and conservative clothing. When visiting mosques, covering shoulders and legs is both a respectful gesture and helps reduce unnecessary attention. Be careful not to disturb those praying during prayer times and follow the instructions of officials. If you have any doubts about appropriate or legal behavior, ask your tour guide or group leader. If you are detained for illegal behavior, Turkish authorities are obligated to inform your embassy or consular representative. Furthermore, you have the right to request direct communication with these representatives. Always remain calm, respectful, and polite towards Turkish authorities. Turkish laws require everyone, regardless of citizenship, to carry identification documents. Remember that while within Turkey's borders, you are subject to Turkish law.
